SIKH ASSOCIATION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA - 280 Shreeve Road, Canning Vale, WA 6155
Telephone: +618-9256 1314
Founded: 1975
Brief History: Sikh Association of Western Australia was officially registered on the 13th of August 1975. Initially the few members used to get together once a month usually at a members house to hold religious ceremonies and social functions. With time membership grew and the religious ceremonies were moved to community halls. In 1985 the dream to find a permanent home came true when SAWA bought a property in Kensington. However as the Sikh community continued to increase in numbers there developed a need for a bigger and better facility. In 1997 SAWA purchased 5 acres of land in Canning Vale and had it successfully zoned as a place of worship and community use. SAWA now looks after the needs of about 300 families. The new Gurdwara should cater for the needs of the Sikh community for the next 2 decades. The total cost to date is more than $1.7 million most of which has been raised through donations and from the Sikh communities in Western Australia, interstate and overseas.
SIKH GURDWARA PERTH - 13 Murray Street, Bayswater, WA 6053
Telephone: +618-9371 5850
Founded: 1996
Brief History: Sikh Gurdwara Perth was founded in 1996 by around twenty families. The first Sunday divan was held in a classroom at Nollamara High School. Langar was served along the school corridors. Slowly the sangat grew and in 1997 a church was purchased in the suburb of Bayswater to be converted to a Gurdwara. In 1999 a full time Gianiji was employed to run all the religious aspects of the Gurdwara. The sangat has now grown to about 130 families. Punjabi classes are held each Sunday together with tabla and kirtan lessons. The sangat also participates in many Australian cultural events to try to engage the wider community and make it more aware about Sikhs. The need for larger premises has prompted the Sangat to make plans to buy land in the suburb of Ballajura. The plan is to have a purpose built Gurdwara at the site in the next 5 years. Hopefully with Guruji’s help these dreams and efforts will be fulfilled and our future generations will be able to uphold the Sikh traditions and teaching.
